One hairstyle, six finishes

These are references for choosing a finish; placement should suit your own braids.
What each detail adds
Cuffs
Gold cuffs add small points of shine at different heights along the braids.
Beads
Ivory beads stand out against dark hair; just a few create contrast.
Thread & ribbon
A fine thread makes a subtle line; a wider ribbon, like the one pictured, lets the colour stand out.
Shells
Cowrie shells add an organic shape and a light tone that stands out among the braids.
Spirals
Metal spirals wrap around a section of braid, leaving the hair visible between the coils.
Charms
Stars, moons or other shapes hang from small rings to highlight a few selected braids.
Before choosing your accessories
Match it to the braid
The hole in a bead and the opening of a cuff need to suit the braid's thickness. Do not choose by the outside size alone.
Choose where the detail goes
A few pieces near the face, spaced along the length or grouped at the ends create different looks. Bring a reference that clearly shows the placement.
Check the fastening and weight
Check how it opens, how it comes off and whether it snags. If the finished style pulls or feels uncomfortable, use fewer accessories and have the placement checked.
Bring a clear idea to your appointment
Whether you wear braids or create them, agree on these details before starting.
A hairstyle should not hurt. If discomfort continues after removing an accessory, check the tension of the braids too.
